WHAT MAKES A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER??
To be successful it takes
more than just a nice camera and a desire to take pretty pictures in this
creative yet technical professional field. There are a few qualities that you
should try to cultivate as soon as possible, whether you want to work for
newspapers, magazines, portrait studios, or as a freelance event photographer.
CURIOSITY
Good photography is about
conveying a vision, your vision in a way that it may be appreciated by an external
observer. A good photograph tends to own an original and/ or unusual vision
that differs from the norm. The photographer should have the wherewithal to
pause and want to look in the first place. Photographer should be open to
exploring other styles, subjects and ways of photography – even if only
vicariously through the work of others; inspiration can come from anywhere.
COORDINATION
Hand-eye coordination is
vital to photography careers. If you don’t have good hand-eye coordination and
a steady hand, you better start doing as many exercises as possible to help
develop these skills now.
THE ABILITY TO WORK FAST
Working fast means not
missing the moment even in situations with relatively static subjects you still
need to move fast take too long, and critical light changes and disappears very
fast. It can also make the difference between camera shake from rushing and
nervousness or having a moment to take a breath and calmly release the shutter.
LOOK AT LIGHT
Learning to use your camera
is the logical first step, when you start out in photography. A camera is just
a tool that has the ability to record light. The first thing you should think
about when you walk out the door to photograph is light, not the camera. The lighting
is first thing that every photographer will look for every time before they
begin to shoot and constantly be aware of while they are shooting. The light
will affect how they shoot and the settings that they use. A slight change in
direction to your light source can completely change how an image will look. If
you do not first understand the light, you can’t learn how to use your camera
correctly.
FAMILIARITY WITH THE
EQUIPMENT
Confidence in using our
camera inspires confidence in our clients, as well as keeps us calm while
shooting. That means we are less likely to miss a shot because a button does
something other than expected, or the camera started up in the wrong mode. The
more cameras we have, the more difficult this becomes, as we simply have to
shoot more to keep everything familiar.
LEARN LIGHT-ROOM
To become a good
photographer, editing is vitally important. Using Light room as it is the
industry standard and it works well for so many photographers. Photograph in
RAW to get the most flexibility and quality in your images and explore all of
the RAW development settings.
